Patient Information

Over the years we've accumulated a list of the most frequently asked questions patients ask. We hope some of these questions and answers will help.

Q. Why do you need to take dental x-rays once a year?
A. X-rays are important diagnostic tools needed to diagnose the start of any unseen cavities, periodontal disease, or failing restorations. Without x-rays we cannot be certain your mouth is in optimal health. The exposure from our x-ray units is extremely minimal. Our office utilizes the most advanced form of x-ray machines & techniques available, to protect you from unnecessary exposure.

Q. How much will my Dental Insurance cover?
A. Many insurance plans tell you that you will be covered up to 80 or 100%. We've found that many plans cover only 20 - 50% of an average fee. The amount your plan covers depends on how much your employer paid for the plan. The less paid, the less your plan will cover.

Each plan utilized in our office has different percentages, deductibles, maximums (usually less than $1,200.00 per year), procedures covered, and varying fees that the plan will allow. We make our treatment recommendations based on your individual needs and not on what your insurance may or may not cover.

Q. Is bleaching safe for my teeth and how long will it last?
A. When performed by a licensed professional and done properly, whitening is very safe and should not harm your teeth or gums. There are many variables that can affect the outcome of the procedure, such as the type of discoloration, or the presence of any old fillings, or other restorations. It is best to have a thorough exam before any bleaching procedure is undertaken.

Once the whitening procedure is complete, there may be a gradual relapse back to the original shade. To prevent relapse, one should avoid any foods or liquids that stain teeth and also use "touch-up" trays at home to maintain that healthy white smile.

Q. Is the Mercury in my old silver fillings harmful to me?
A. The mercury that is in your old silver fillings is rather minimal and should not effect your health according to the American Dental Association. That being said, 99.8% of the time we will not use silver/mercury in fillings anymore. We have found that those old silver fillings cause teeth to fracture and become brittle. We replace old silver fillings with Tooth Color Restorations made of Composite or Porcelain. These state of the art restorations are actually stronger than natural teeth and will last many, many years.

Q. What is a Cosmetic Dentist? Aren't all Dentists the same?

Dr. Rehorn has undergone extensive post graduate training in Smile Design and Reconstruction. Q. I've been very scared of Dentists ever since I was a child. Do you have ways to make my experience less stressful?
A. Absolutely!! We take pride in making the dental experience as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Drs. Rehorn understands a visit to the dentist can be un-nerving. Our Drs. and Staff are friendly and supportive. We offer a full range of anesthetics, relaxing gas, and oral anxiety medicines for your comfort. We also offer CD players with your choice of music, pillows, warm blankets, and hot scented towels to freshen up after every procedure. The experience at our dental office is second to none.

Q. Why do I need to see a dentist at least every 6 months?
A. It is critical for dentists to evaluate a person’s oral health every 6 months at least. Decay, plaque, tartar, dental irregularities and cavities, if let unchecked or untreated can lead to more costly and serious dental problems. Once a small cavity starts it only takes 6 - 8 months for that cavity to become very large. In order to catch early cavities or periodontal disease the American Dental Association recommends visits to the dentist every 6 months at least. It may be necessary for some of our patients to see us every 3 months depending on their oral condition and oral health.

If you have any questions that may not have been answered please feel free to contact us & ask our doctors or staff; or better yet schedule a dental consultation appointment.
